In college, Officer Eakin registered with Be The Match Registry as a bone marrow donor and recently received a call that he was a match for a 25-year-old female battling acute Myelogenous Leukemia. After a secondary confirmation and a physical, Jacob was flown out to Boise and began the procedure on October 12th at St. Luke’s Medical Center. He went under an 8-hour procedure where blood was pulled from one arm, processed through a machine to remove the stem cells, then returned through the other arm. The stem cells were packaged and sent to the recipient. From what Jacob learned, the recipients go through a lengthy process to prep their body to receive the cells and an aggressive treatment that kills the cells in their body to allow for the cancer free cells to thrive.
